INSPIRATION: A mind-blowing Rube Goldberg
I stumbled across this Rube Goldberg the other day and had to share. I could have filed in TECH: or create a new category, GEEK: but I find it very inspiring as well as the behind the scenes video.
But first, what or who is Rube Goldberg? This is the definition from the Merriam-Webster dictionary:
Rube Goldberg ˈrüb-ˈgōl(d)-ˌbərg
accomplishing by complex means what seemingly could be done simply.
So now that you have the definition, allow me to illustrate it with this self-portrait machine (click to view large).
I don’t know if it’s this particular machine that inspired the guys over at 2D Photography Inc but they sure did a hell of a job making a simple task much more complex than needed.
This machine is pure genius and a lot of fun to watch. I don’t know if it reaches the geek in me, the kid in me or both but I wish I had one just like that! I had to rewind several times to understand what happened (and yet, there are still some mysteries remaining) and had a good laugh with the iPad airport screening and the fact that it’s a Canon lens (well a Canon lens mug in fact) that is hammered when all others are Nikkors.
What other items can you spot? I have found the following:
- Gary Fong Lightsphere
- Lastolite Hilite
This behind the scenes video, below, is inspirational to say the least and some of what they say can be applied to everyday things. One of the last segments of the video is called “If at first you don’t succeed, try another 98 times”. This reminds me of Winston Churchill’s famous quote: «Never, never, never give up!» So don’t stop trying!
This last video is an explanation of how the photo booth count down works. Wickedly creative!
I hope you enjoyed these as much as I did. It was a nice break from this rainy day we are having in Geneva!
