INSPIRATION: Henri Cartier-Bresson

INSPIRATION: Henri Cartier-Bresson

Not this weekend but the one before that I was in Zürich for the Swiss photo awards and I decided to take this opportunity to go see the Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibit at the Museum für Gestaltung.

I’ve always admired Cartier-Bresson’s work, his unique sense of composition and perfect timing. The «Decisive Moment» as he used to call it.

Though I knew quite a bit of his pieces, I did discover many new ones. His commissioned series by Life Magazine, his portraits and even some movies he directed. What I also discovered, and this came as a bit of a surprise, is that he cropped some of his images. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against the fact of cropping — I do a bit of so myself — but I was surprised Cartier-Bresson did. I had always thought he composed his images in the viewfinder.

Anyhow, he was a genius, his eye was absolutely unique and his photographs are timeless. I can only recommend to make the trip to Zürich and wander all day long looking at these incredible images.
