Behind the scenes with Bembika.

First things first, let me introduce you to Olivier, aka Bembika. Olivier is a pretty darn good dancer and has won several battles, contests, etc. He and I first met at a wedding we were both guests of. We were seated at the same table and as I was working on «Faces of Geneva» at the time, I asked him where he was from. Turns out he’s originally from the Congo and that was a country I had not photographed yet.

Anyway, fast-forward a few months to a cold evening last January. I met Olivier in his favorite place and we decided on what to do for this picture. He immediately offered to execute a dance move which I could not refuse. In case you’ve never seen it, here is that picture.

Again, fast-forward a few months to mid-October. We decided to meet again and this time to shoot more than just one photo. So I gathered a small crew: Alexandra was my assistant for the day and Anka took care of production issues (thanks for the cookies and drinks!) as well as taking a few behind the scenes shots. We met in this pretty grungy looking garage, went over the different shots for the day and began shooting.

As you can see in the final photos below, Olivier’s kindness and energy are remarkable. So are his precision and dance moves. He is a true athlete and artist.

I would like to thank Bembika again for this shoot. Not only did I have loads of fun, I am also very happy how the photos turned out.

Now, for you gear heads out there, here is what I used for this shoot:

  • 2x Elinchrom Ranger Quadras with various modifiers
  • 1x Nikon SB-900 with some gels
  • Phase One 645DF with 80mm Schneider Kreuznach lens
  • Nikon D3s with 70-200mm lens

Cheers,
josh
